Brothers To The End
"I remember the first time I met Zeke. It was the fourth grade, we were both riding on the bus home. Zeke was playing Pokémon on his game boy and I asked him if he wanted to play with me. He told me to come over to his house, which happened to be one street over from my own house. I still remember it like it was yesterday. I walked into his house and I thought I was in a zoo. There were kids everywhere. I soon learned that he had four siblings and his mother Detra was pregnant with another! I thought they were insane but I stayed and we played Pokémon together for the rest of the day. From that day on, I knew we would be best friends." I paused, pounded my hand against my chest, tears streaming down my face and said "Brothers to the End."
I wake up at 12 to my phone ringing. "Hello?" I said exhausted.
"Drew, do you know where Zeke is?" Jon said hastily.
"Bro, what are you talking about?"
"There was a wreck on 747 with a Blue Chevy Cobalt in it. It's really bad."
Zeke drove that car but I didn't think much of it, lots of people drive that car. "I'm sure he's fine.
He was with Nathan and Cam."
He was with Nathan and Cam."
"Okay, well see if you can get a hold of them. Bye." Jon hung up so I decided to call Zeke just to be safe. Ring...Ring...Ring...Ring...No Answer. I tried Nathan, no answer. Suddenly I get a call back from Nathan. "DREW! Its bad. Zeke's getting air lifted to the Cincinnati hospital." Nathan said winded.
"What?! Where are you? How do you know this?" I exclaimed.
" I'm at heritage by 747, we got hit. I'm fine but we need to get to the hospital to see him."
"Okay I'm coming to get you now!" I leaped up immediately and sprinted to my car. My heart pounding hoping my friends are okay. Once I arrived to Heritage there were cop cars everywhere blocking off the road. I pulled into the parking. "DREW!" Nathan yelled as he ran over to me. "Dude we have to go to see Zeke!"
"Are you okay?" I asked him.
"Yeah I'm fine lets go!" He exclaimed. When we arrived in the Cincinnati hospital we asked to see Zeke. They told us he was under extreme care and put us in a room where his parents were already waiting. We sat for hours without any news on him. My parents came and convinced us to go home and that we could visit him in the morning.
Ring...Ring...Ri.."Hello?" I said
"Drr..Drew?"
"Who is this?" I asked.
" It's Detra." Zeke's mother stated.
"Oh, hey how's Zeke doing? Me and Nathan are coming to visit as soon as we can."
"Drew. It's not good. He didn't make it.." She said sadly.
"You mean like we can't see him today right?" I questioned.
"No, he's gone. Zeke's dead." Those words still ring in my head today. I couldn't believe it. How could this happen? Zeke, my best friend, dead.
A few days passed, I accepted the fact that this really happened and brought his parents some of his stuff he had left at my house. It was one of the most humbling moments of my life seeing his family. They were so glad to see me and seemingly happy. I realize that the reason for this was that my presence in their house made them feel like I was there to hang out with him again and in that moment it was as if he was in the room with us. His parents knew he was mine and Nathan's best friend. They asked me "Other than you and Nathan who would you consider a best friend of Zeke's?"
"Cam. No doubt." I said almost instantly.
"Would you guys be willing to speak at his funeral?" I was shocked. This was a big honor but at the same time I know I couldn't talk about his death. It was too sad for me to even think about let alone speak of it in front of people about.
"I don't know. That would be really tough for all of us." I said hesitantly
"We just want you all to share a favorite memory you have with him. A story, a adventure, anything just to show people the love and friendship you all shared together and how fun you all had with one another. It would really mean a lot to us."
"We could absolutely do that." I knew I could do that. We never had a boring time together and I knew Nathan and Cam would also want to.
When the day came I had no idea what I wanted to tell everyone. I had so many great memories with him. Once I got on the podium, I paused for a second. I knew exactly what I wanted to tell everyone about. The moment we became best friends. "I remember the first time I met Zeke..."
