Celebrity
"God I really wish I was Blake Lively."
"Why she's just a person?"
"No she's a celebrity, she's beautiful, and rich, and perfect." Sarah said dreamingly.
"How is she any different then you or me other than the money?" Questioned Johnny.
He raises a good question. What does make her so special? Or more generally all celebrities. As far as I understand all people are born the same way. So why are some seemingly above everyone else? Celebrity doesn't have a specific measurement of how "celebrity" you are. How do we determine who is a celebrity? Also what's the difference from being famous and being a celebrity.
For example Justin Bieber was born the same way as you or me. However he is placed on another level. Simply because he is a celebrity. I believe one way someone becomes a celebrity is by singing and everyone knowing their music. If everyone knows your name and music are you a celebrity? Well I would say no. Everyone knows who Randy Jackson is. However I wouldn't say is a celebrity but simply famous. You only see him in stuff that he is directly associated with (American idol, Journey). On the other hand you see Justin Bieber in everything. Commercials for things like clothes, toothpaste, acne cream, etc. It's his celebrity status which puts him in things other than his music career.
Maybe music is the way to becoming a celebrity. This can't be true though. People like Ray Lewis are over the place as well. Ray Lewis was a football player for the Baltimore Ravens. Since he's retired you would think that would be the end of him. Then you turn on the T.V and you seem him on a commercial for Old Spice. How did he become famous, he doesn't sing? His football career must have propelled him to being famous. How did he become a celebrity? Perhaps its his way of connecting with people through men and wanting to be big and strong like him so people idolize him. If this was the case then all big strong football players would be a celebrity.
Perhaps being a big strong football player or a singer are the ways to gaining celebrity status. This can't be the reason though. All of the people from The Jersey Shore are famous and they did neither of those. They simply lived in a house and aloud MTV to record all the things they did in their lives. For example Mike "the situation" is very famous. He was on a celebrity roast and there is nothing about him that screams funny. He was never a comedian nor an actor in a comedy. He was on a reality T.V show. So why would he be asked to be on a show that he couldn't really contribute to. The answer is his celebrity status.
What's the difference between a celebrity and being famous? How do people gain the celebrity status over just being famous. Maybe it's them being in stuff other than just what they are known for. Lots of people are famous but they are not looked up to like most celebrities. Maybe only beautiful people are celebrities. That can't be true because Snooki is a celebrity and she is ugly as hell. It's seems as though they need to be likable or interesting enough to be put in commercials and other things apart from what made them famous. By being in other things this broadens their fan base and causes them to be looked up to by many.
All of these people are just that people. Like you and me, born from a woman. They have a mother and a father and grew up from childhood to adulthood. There is one thing however that all of these people have that we don't. They all have a way to become known. All of them are heard on the radio, seen on T.V, or seen at concerts etc. Through this people get to know them and their faces. Through this people fall in love or love to hate these people. Being a celebrity has nothing to do with who you are. I believe it's simply how people view you and how you view yourself compared to those people. Sarah wants to look like Blake Lively because she is "perfect". Blake Lively is a beautiful woman and she had lots of money, but she is by no means perfect. If she was a random girl on the street and no longer a celebrity Sarah wouldn't walk by and wish she was her.
Being a celebrity gives people the illusion that you are perfect. Because of this people want to be just like the celebrities. I would Guarantee that most celebrities have their own problems and issues just like the rest of us do. It's because we raise them up so high in our minds that we sometimes forget that. The celebrity that we picture is probably not the one in real life. Maybe on the T.V screen yes, but behind closed doors no.
Having celebrities isn't a bad thing in some aspects however. Having these rich, fit, seemingly perfect human beings can actually be good. If we believe these people to be so great then maybe we will strive to be more fit, healthier, and harder working so that one day we could be like them. Working harder is always a good thing and if it takes celebrities for people to work hard then lets get more of them.
Celebrities are on "top" of the world. People know them. People want to meet them. People want to be just like them. There is no one way to become a celebrity. People from all over the world, from different backgrounds, childhoods, ethnic groups all can be celebrities. It's just about finding a way how and getting people to drool over you. Just like Sarah did with Blake Lively.
